London Fashion Week’s success has definitely rubbed off on creatives across the country, as Forest Hill SE23 became the latest postcode to take to the stage with their very own catwalk show. Part of the (Mary) portas pilot project, Catwalk director Charlotte Cameron (I love me a bit of alliteration) saw this opportunity as a way to change the deteriorating high street, turning SE23 into a ‘Fashion Magnet’. Taken from their website: ‘FHFW is promoting and developing the existing fashion provision, attracting new boutiques and designer-makers and providing small-scale manufacturing facilities and training’.

Held at Horniman museum – designers, make-up artists and models from Forest Hill and surrounding areas worked together on this voluntary project putting on a week of workshops, stalls and exhibitions for inspired creatives. I had the pleasure of covering FHFW alongside videographer and photographer friends Michael Nekrasov and Nina Edy.

The Fashion Week commenced with an explosive catwalk show, featuring the latest collections from local designers WALTERWORKs, Reddskinbags, Mary Martin London, Paulina Palian and N’Damus London (to name a few). With over 500 tickets being sold, it was the perfect platform for aspiring designers to get a feel of the industry, and what better way than the loud cheers of the local community!

SE23 has in the arts is special thing to note as speaking to people who attended I learned many came not only to support family, friends but the forest hill community. Such a great turn out prompted a social media storm with models also tweeting snaps from back stage and spectators complimenting the fantastic efforts of all involved.
FHFW named as ‘a legacy project’ wasn’t just 5 days of getting together, it vocalised the passion for fashion that lives within designers, fashionistas, high-street lovers, media enthusiasts and the SE23 community. For that reason alone I believe Forest Hill Fashion Week will prevail for years to come…and I can’t wait for next 2014!
